To find a chord within a scale, start with the root and take every other note. This is because our function as bass players is to outline the harmony of the chord progression, so chord tones are essential. It is actually a lot more important to know the chords associated with a scale than it is to know the modes. If learning all of these new scale patterns seems overwhelming, try stripping each one back to its triad and go from there. Once you feel comfortable with these shapes, try starting the scales on different fingers and work out other patterns. A one-octave shape is provided in the TAB, but don’t forget that it is important to learn different patterns for every scale so you are prepared to play it anywhere on the neck and starting on any finger. Practice these scales using the notation below. The modes in the key of C Melodic Minor are as follows: Natural Minor – C D Eb F G Ab Bb – 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 Melodic Minor – C D Eb F G A B – 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 It contains a flattened third like the Natural Minor, but the sixth and seventh are major instead of minor. If the notes are played at the same time you’ll hear a stable and consonant sound. The melodic minor scale is a variation on the natural minor scale. It contains two tritones, and has within it several tonal implications. This scale is rich in natural contour and tension. If we look at the distance between the notes C & G, we can count 7 semitones. particularly beautiful scale is the ascending melodic minor scale (a major scale with a flatted 3rd), sometimes referred to as the Jazz Minor Scale (depending on how it is applied). However, not every interval will sound dissonant. If you play C & C♯ at the same time on your instrument you’ll quickly notice it sounds unsettling or dissonant. The distance between C & C♯ is a minor 2nd, and the distance between other adjacent notes such as G & G♯ is also a minor 2nd. The name and quality of an interval depends on the distance from each other.įor example, any two notes separated by 1 semitone form a minor 2nd interval (also called a ♭2 or ‘flat two’). Two semitones isĬalled a whole tone or whole-step (such as C to D). The step between any adjacent note (such as C and C♯) is called a semitone or half-step. The distance between any two notes is called an interval.
